Chain pump

Ancient water pump using discs on an endless chain.

The chain pump moves water using an endless chain fitted with circular discs. One section of the chain sits in the water, while the rest runs inside a tube that is just a bit wider than the discs. When the chain is pulled upward through the tube, water gets trapped between the discs and is carried up to the top, where it spills out. This kind of pump was used for many centuries across the ancient Middle East, Europe, and China.

In the Near East and Europe, the earliest known evidence comes from a Babylonian text dating to around 700 B.C. These pumps were usually powered by people or animals. By about 200 B.C., they appeared in ancient Egypt, now fitted with a pair of gear wheels. The Greeks and Romans also used a version, sometimes with pots or scoops attached to the chain that tipped out water as they passed over the top pulley; a 2nd-century example survives in London. Philo of Byzantium wrote about such a device in the 2nd century B.C., and the historian Vitruvius mentioned them around 30 B.C. Fragments of cogs, a crank, and discs from a bilge pump on a 1st-century Roman barge were found at Lake Nemi. During the Renaissance, chain pumps were used in European mines—mineralogist Georg Agricola illustrated them in his 1556 book *De re metallica*. They were also common on naval vessels for pumping bilges, and examples from the 19th century are known for low-lift irrigation.

In China, chain pumps were used from at least the 1st century A.D., where they were called dragon backbones. One early account comes from the Han dynasty philosopher Wang Chong (A.D. 27–97), writing around A.D. 80. Unlike Western versions, Chinese chain pumps used square pallets instead of pear-shaped buckets. Illustrations show them drawing water up a slanted channel. Some were powered by hydraulics—a rushing current turned a horizontal water wheel that drove a vertical wheel—while others used a horizontal mechanical wheel turned by oxen, which then drove a vertical wheel. There were also square-pallet chain pumps operated by pedals. From the 1st century onward, they spread widely across the Chinese countryside, mostly for irrigation but also for public works.
